Reviewing the latest offering from Edifier®.
Review by Emily Hirschmann
If there’s one thing technological that we can all agree on it is that mini speaker systems usually disappoint. From the tinny bass to the generally underwhelming quality there is little to impress... Unless you happen to own a set of Edifier® Aurora Multimedia Speakers.
Small, sweet and astonishingly good quality, the Edifier® Aurora comprises a 9-Watt tubular subwoofer and two diminutive satellite speakers which pack far more of an audio punch than you’d ever give them credit for. While not quite reaching ear-bleeding volume, the system is more than adequate to fill a room with undistorted sound, making this the perfect companion for PCs, laptops and MP3 players, and an ideal piece of kit for the bedrooms of older children whose parents would rather not have the latest pop trend drown out the evening’s entertainment.
Simply designed to enable a ‘plug and play’ set-up, the Edifier® Aurora need only be linked to the mains and your audio device for you to begin enjoying your latest toy. With volume controls situated on top of the speaker, the arrangement couldn’t be simpler to use and for swift silencing you need only depress the two volume buttons simultaneously, then tap either one to resume play. The bass is strong and impressive, while the spherical speakers are magnetically-shielded meaning that the top notes are clear and crisp, while the midrange carries through confidently (if marginally muted when at the highest volume).
Created from brushed aluminium in a range of ten colours (we opted for the Passion Pink), the Edifier® Aurora is as pleasing to look at as it is to use. The design is curvy and cute, bringing to mind the decor of The Jetsons, and while the size means that this system could easily be hidden away, most people will be happy to keep the Aurora out on display. Thanks to the materials used, the build quality is impressive too.
When reviewing a product I feel duty-bound to dig out a negative, but with Edifier® Aurora Multimedia Speakers it’s actually rather a struggle. I suppose a USB link would be handy instead of relying on AC power, and with everything these days, an iPhone dock would be nice, but neither element could be considered essential and their absence has no injurious impact upon the product.
When it comes down to it, what we all want from any form of audio equipment is impressive sound quality, and I can honestly say that no mini speaker system has ever impressed me more.
Edifier® Aurora MP300 Plus Multimedia Speakers retail at £49.99 and are available from www.amazon.co.uk and www.currys.co.uk.
